The
Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland - a great place to visit, work and
live.
The history of the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland reveals a web
of closely related stories of diverse cultures including Native
Americans, Colonists and African Americans who sustained their lives
by farming the rich soil and harvesting the treasures of the
Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. Farmers and Waterman, and the
prosperity they achieved in supplying food to major cities in the
United States dominate the last century's history of the Lower
Shore. Famous natives such as J. Millard Tawes (governor of
Maryland), Harry Clifton "Curly" Byrd (President of University of
Maryland), Lem and Steve Ward (famous decoy carvers) and William
"Judy" Johnson (first African American in the Baseball Hall of Fame)
were all descendants of watermen and farmers. While the rural
cultural is still dominant, the Lower Shore has more recently become
a destination for travelers, retirees, students, young families and
vacationers.
